Frequently Asked Questions
Who are you?
I'm Scott, and I've been learning Ukrainian since January 1st 2025. I'm a native English speaker from Canada with Ukrainian heritage.
Who is Looping Ukrainian for?
Looping Ukrainian is for those looking for a convenient and consistent way to study Ukrainian in a structured manner at their own pace, on their own time.
One of the greatest challenges of learning a language outside of formal classes and lessons is finding the right material. Looping Ukrainian addresses this by providing timely resources built on the foundations of well-known native Ukrainian sources.
Looping Ukrainian follows a similar structural progression to the Яблуко textbook series. Alongside a tutor, this is the main resource I use in my own studies. To fill in any gaps, I draw on a variety of other sources, such as Yuri Shevchuk's Beginner's Ukrainian and dedicated grammar references. The result is a modified structure geared towards becoming functional faster - focusing on what is practical and readily applicable in everyday communication.
Think of Looping Ukrainian as supplementary practice. Formal classes and lessons only make up a small portion of your time, and textbooks only take you so far. Most progress happens on your own, and Looping Ukrainian supports that by offering weekly practice material that goes beyond a single source.
What does Looping Ukrainian offer?
Looping Ukrainian blends intensive and extensive reading with detailed notes to take you from basic comprehension to fluency.
Each week you'll work with a new text, analyzing the aspects most relevant to your current level. By the end of each week you'll have expanded your vocabulary, mastered key grammar rules, and understood how words and sentence structures work together.
The method balances immersion with clarity: concepts appear naturally in the texts, then are unpacked with English notes that connect directly to the material. Looping Ukrainian also offers downloadable tools and guides to assist you in analyzing the text until the process becomes intuitive.
Output practice then reinforces what you've learned. Closed-ended questions drawn from the text strengthen understanding, while open-ended questions invite you to actively use the language. This gradual progression turns passive knowledge into active skill and builds confidence.

How much does the subscription cost?
A monthly subscription is $13 CAD per month.
An annual subscription is $125 CAD per year. (20% off)
Both options give you full access to everything Looping Ukrainian offers.
In my own studies, I've found that the best results come from using a combination of paid and free resources. High-quality paid material forms the basis of your studies, while free resources supplement as necessary.
Looping Ukrainian is designed to be part of your base. Native material, like textbooks, often move too quickly or don't provide enough practice to fully grasp the ideas presented. You need to find additional material on the same topics at an appropriate level. Looping Ukrainian provides this, saving you the time and effort so you can focus all your energy on learning the language.
Unlike traditional forms of language learning - which can be a big commitment and prohibitively expensive - Looping Ukrainian is affordable and sustainable. Work at your own pace, on your own time. Try it for yourself before committing - the first month is free and available for everyone.
Why learn from a non-native speaker?
Learning from a non-native speaker offers unique advantages.
As a native English speaker with no prior background in Ukrainian, I've had to - and continue to - build my knowledge from the ground up. That means I know where learners are likely to stumble and can explain concepts in terms that feel more relatable. In many ways, you don't need to learn from an expert - just someone a few steps ahead.
Since Ukrainian is the first foreign language I've studied seriously, I've also had to learn how to learn a language. Looping Ukrainian grew out of experimenting with different methods and materials, keeping what worked and was enjoyable.
The materials here aren't meant to replace native resources but to supplement them - filling in the gaps, clarifying complex concepts and ideas, and offering sufficient repetition where native materials may move too quickly.
Do you use "AI" (LLMs)?
Yes - but only to support my own studies. I don't use LLMs to generate the material on this site.
For language learning, LLMs are simply another tool. Like textbooks, dictionaries, or even the notes and downloadable guides I publish here, their purpose is to help you learn more efficiently. I use them to deepen my own understanding of what I'm studying.
That said, I share many of the common grievances. LLMs are often used to cheat, replace genuine creative work and social connection, or churn out soulless "AI slop" for clicks and quick profit. In these cases, the motivation is external: grades, accreditation, likes, or money.
My motivation is internal: to learn Ukrainian well enough that I don't need to rely on tools at all. Using LLMs to generate the material on this site would therefore undermine its primary purpose - to improve my own Ukrainian.

I need some extra help, can I work with you directly?

This isn't a formal lesson, nor is it meant to replace working with a native Ukrainian tutor. Use this if there is something specific you need help with regarding the material on this site. For example:
- Want to figure out the best way to do a loop at your current level? We'll go through it step by step so you can get the most out of future loops.
- Struggling with tricky concepts like grammatical gender or cases? We'll break them down together until they feel manageable.
- Want to clarify something before your next tutoring session - or not ready to commit to a tutor yet? I can help you bridge that gap.
These are just a few ways we can work together to make sure you're getting the most out of your subscription. Members can find the link to booking in the weekly email.
