Word Stress

Наголос

  • The emphasis placed on a syllable in a word.
  • Word stress is essential for correct pronunciation and meaning.

Pronunciation

In Ukrainian, every word with more than one syllable has a stressed syllable. This is the syllable you emphasize when speaking the word, pronouncing it a bit louder and a bit longer than the others.

Word stress always falls on a vowel, but there are no universal rules for its placement. It can shift for multiple reasons, including number, grammatical case, or verb conjugation. Наприклад (for example):

Shift based on number:

  • стілець (chair, singular)
  • стільці (chairs, plural)

Shift based on grammatical case:

  • аеропорт (airport, nominative case)
  • в аеропорту (at the airport, locative case)

Shift based on verb conjugation:

  • пишу (I am writing, 1st person singular)
  • пишеш (you are writing, 2nd person singular)

This means that you need to memorize the stress marks and patterns rather than rely on fixed rules.

As you use the language more you'll begin to recognize common shifts and patterns. I've found that flashcards work well for learning word stress alongside meaning. Then, as you encounter these words in other contexts their correct pronunciation becomes increasingly intuitive.

To encourage proper pronunciation and help you build fluency faster, stressed letters on this site are bold. Textbooks and other printed materials usually mark stress with an acute accent mark (´), but I've found that this can cause formatting issues online.

The weekly worksheet does not mark stress at all - it's intentionally left blank so it reads like normal text and gives you space to practice. Feel free to use acute accent marks there when doing your loop.

Variable stress

While most words have only one stressed syllable, some have two. This is commonly referred to as "variable" stress.

  • також (also, too)

In such cases you can choose which syllable to emphasize based on euphony - the smoothness and rhythm of speech. You cannot place stress on both syllables, as this would sound unnatural and confusing. You must pick one or the other.

Я люблю каву, а також чай.
I like coffee, and tea too.

Вона також працює в університеті.
She also works at the university.

Try repeating these example sentences with the opposite stress on the word також. Technically, they're both correct. Which one you choose will be based on how you want the sentence to flow.

Meaning

In Ukrainian, word stress is also important for understanding the meaning of a word. Shifting the stressed syllable can completely change a word's meaning, even if the spelling stays the same.

  • замок (castle)
  • замок (lock)

Or:

  • брати (brothers)
  • брати (imperfective aspect of the verb to take)

So even though the meaning of a word is usually clear from context, correct word stress is essential for competency in the language and avoiding misunderstandings.

Most of the words you'll learn from textbooks and Looping Ukrainian will already have word stress marked. Here are some tools you can use when you come across new words that don't.

Try all three to see which works best for you, or use a combination of them.
